About Georgetown University

Georgetown University is a Jesuit, private university located in Georgetown, which is a neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, DC that was originally a trading village called Tohoga, inhabited by Native Americans, until the arrival of Europeans, in the 1600s.

Georgetown University traces its roots back in 1634, when the Province of Maryland was founded by Jesuit settlers from England, which was later known as Georgetown College. In its early years, the institution suffered from considerable financial strain, relying only on private funding and limited profit from local Jesuit-owned lands. Bishop John Carroll established the school at its present location, and the American Revolution made the university’s free religion practice possible.

With its history spanning on a period of more than 400 years, the official founding date of the university is still being debated, being currently fixed to the date January 23, 1789. After its long struggle over the years, in order to remain functional, after the Civil War, Georgetown expanded into a branched university, under the leadership of president Patrick Francis Healy, being known today as the oldest Roman Catholic university in USA, offering its students undergraduate degrees in 48 majors, through 4 undergraduate schools, including the opportunity for them to study abroad, more than 50% of its undergraduate students attending classes overseas.

The athletic teams from Georgetown are known as the Georgetown Hoyas, who participate in NCAA’s Division I, generally competing in the Big East Conference, including in the Division I FCS Patriot League, for football, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, for sailing, and in the in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges, for rowing. According to the U.S. News and World Report, Georgetown’s athletic program is amongst the 20 best in the nation, the Hoyas being particularly known for their achievements in men’s basketball, winning the NCAA Championship in 1984, under the leadership of Coach John Thompson.

Over the years, Georgetown has produced a series of notable alumni, the list containing resonant names such as Ricardo Arias Espinosa - President of Panama, Bill Clinton - 42nd President of the United States, Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. - Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, Barbara M. Durham - Chief Justice, Washington Supreme Court, William Peter Blatty - author of The Exorcist, as well as many other great people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
